STOOD BY AFFECTED PEOPLE DURING & AFTER PHAILIN
Cyclone phailin and the resultant floods ravaged 18 of the 30 Districts of Orissa-India, killing at least 44 people. Timely evacuation of over 9lakh people helped keep causalities to the minimum. Yet the cyclone left a trail of destruction, damaging over 4 lakh houses, 6000 school buildings and crops on 6.71 hectare. About 26 lakh trees were knocked down and around 2000 livestock wiped out. The number of affected people stands at over 1.72 crore in 18374 villages and 44 towns. The electricity infrastructure was severely hit.
We at ICDA had appealed to different agencies and public to support our effort to help affected during this hour of natural calamities. Our request was quickly responded by MuslimAid-UK . After having support from MuslimAid , we could reach to 500 nos. of families, who were in desperate need for external support. We distributed relief materials containing Mosquito net, Tarpaulin, rice, dal, sugar, baby foods and flattened rice. The materials were adequate enough to sustain a family for 7days.
